Greyhound Racing Every year thousands of Greyhounds are slaughtered due to them lacking winning potential. They were most likely injured while racing and can no longer compete, because of this they are seen as useless to their owners. On the track the dogs get terrible injuries such as; broken legs, cardiac arrest, spinal cord paralysis, and broken necks. Not only do they suffer on track but of track as well. Most of them live their lives in ware house-style kennels for about twenty hours a day, or they kept outside in the dirt. Many of these Greyhounds suffer from ticks, health problems, and a lack of affection. Luckily Greyhound racing is dying out and is illegal in 41 states.
Puppy Mills Puppy Mills are breeding kennels that raise dogs in cramped, crude, and filthy conditions. The kennels can be small wooden cages and wires or they are simply tied to a tree. Female dogs involved in puppy mills are normally bred twice a year however if they can no longer breed they are abandoned or killed. Mothers and their puppies usually suffer from malnutrition, exposure, and lack of veterinarian care. The pups are torn away from their mothers and are sold to brokers who then give the pups to pet stores. The breeders and brokers make maximum profit by not providing enough food, housing, or veterinarian care.
Animal Hoarding Animals hording is when an individual owns more animals then they can properly take care of. Hoarding animals can easily lead to neglect, and isn't healthy for the owner or the pets. Some of the animals suffer from illnesses while the owner is an unaware. In the end the animal will die from the disease or from hunger. Even though this isn't one of the biggest form of animal abuse it is still a problem that needs to be resolved.
Dog Fighting Dog fighting is one of the most horrifying forms of animal abuse. Dogs are trained to fight another dogs for their owners amusement and profit. These dogs generally live short lives and most of it is spent connected to a heavy chain. The owners of the dogs normally crop their dogs ears and dock their tails close to their body. They do this to limit the areas another dog could use to take advantage of them. The owners usually do the cropping and docking themselves using crude and inhumane techniques.Fights range from a few minutes to several hours. Both of the animals receive several injuries such as puncture wounds, massive blood loss, broken bones, and lacerations. Luckily the fights aren't to the death but that doesn't mean that they survive. Many die after the fight because their injuries were too large or they didn't come out as a victor. The losing dogs are normally discarded, killed, or brutally slaughtered. Dog fighting isn't just illegal because of animal abuse it also includes illegal gambling, possession of drugs and firearms. Dog fights need to come to a close and more people need to know about what is happening.
